Books and Reading with Infants, Toddlers and Preschoolers

There are different types of books and literacy materials that you can introduce as children grow from infants to toddlers to preschoolers.

Place infants on your lap and read read read. Introduce soft books that they can hold, squeeze and explore with their mouths.

Lots of repeated reading of the same books! Toddlers can also “read” the familiar stories with you so it’s time to involve them in the reading experience. Try leaving out the main word of each page and see if your toddler can fill it in for you. Ask them to identify key pictures on the page as you read.

Introduce big books to your preschoolers. Use a pointer to point to pictures and words. Ask the children to turn the pages for you. It’s a whole new interactive reading experience!
